War Diary

Castigatore’s War Diary,, decima quinta Martius, Anno Domini 1666

A week has passed since I arrived in Vienna. Compared to Naples, the city feels provincial. Yet for such a northern place, I suppose it is something of a metropolis. Right now, there is true disorder here. Numerous envoys have arrived to sway the election. And with them came their entourages—now drinking in taverns, brawling in the streets, and God only knows what else in the brothels.

My arrival here, however, is not directly tied to the election. I am hunting the murderer of my loved ones. I have learned that Elena di Mondragone fled to this very city after committing that horrific crime. I cannot bear the thought of the tortures they endured before death, and the memory of their torn bodies still brings me to tears. This deep sorrow and burning hatred are the only feelings I have left.

Yesterday, I found an old comrade, Riccardo, a friend from my soldiering days. A few years ago, he found himself in serious trouble, accused of grave crimes. I helped him escape at the time. He came to Vienna to start a new life.

I was glad to learn he is now a city guard. He’ll have the perfect opportunity to repay the help I once gave him—many times over. He promised to ask around and gather information. We’re to meet again tomorrow.

Today I was meant to meet with Riccardo. Unfortunately, he did not come to our arranged meeting.

Castigatore’s War Diary, decima septima, Anno Domini 1666

I thoroughly searched the area where we were supposed to meet. My fears were confirmed. In one of the alleys, I found a corpse. I am alone now, left entirely to my own devices. I must find Elena and begin tracking her and her people.
