The appearance and clothes of Longinus refer to arts by Juliusz Kossak for Henryk Sienkiewicz’s book “With Fire and Sword”.


The pose sported by Aramis is the first guard for rapier and parrying dagger from the treatise by Salvator Fabris titled “Lo Schermo, overo Scienza d’Arme”. Fabris was the most famous fencing master of the 17th century and his treatise was reprinted and plagiarized numerous times. Here is a sketch where the musketeer is definitely not in the middle of a fight.


The weapon carries by Jean is modeled on a French musket from Musée de l’Armée. It is fitted with a matchlock-flintlock mechanism and dated for c. 1630-40. It is a heavy 20mm caliber musket.
